Brightly Burning

I am Icarus in silence

it is my skin that is burning

as I stand in the light

climbed too high

strived too hard

thought too much about the future

to be weighed down

and held back by societal traps.

I am close to it now

the fireball eternal

that will outlive my life

and all of humanity.

I am ostracized

a little island broken from the shore

of continent and tribe

left to wander

forced to trek

outside the safety of the village fields

— those houses shadow

My ambition

within my mind’s hallowed halls

I speak to others and am rejected

for I am no longer

Their peer.
